Supporting Breastfeeding Families: Small Steps, Big Impact

Cultivating Growth with Go NAPSACC

Child care providers can make a lasting impact on infant health by supporting breastfeeding families. Becoming a Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care site and participating in Go NAPSACC can help families continue their breastfeeding journey while promoting healthy beginnings for children.

August is National Breastfeeding Month, a time to recognize the important role breastfeeding plays in giving children a healthy start. Breastfeeding supports brain development, strengthens immunity, promotes healthy growth, and reduces the risk of illness and chronic disease. It also nurtures the parent-child bond, supports maternal health, and offers a convenient, cost-effective feeding option for families.

While more than 80% of mothers begin breastfeeding, continuing after returning to work can be challenging. According to the National Institutes of Health, only about 21% to 24% continue breastfeeding once they re-enter the workforce. Child care providers can make a meaningful difference during this transition by creating welcoming, supportive environments for breastfeeding families.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) encourages child care programs to become Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care sites. This voluntary statewide recognition demonstrates a commitment to evidence-based nutrition and wellness practices while helping families continue their breastfeeding journey. Simple actions, such as providing a comfortable space for breastfeeding or safely storing expressed milk, can have a lasting impact on children and families.
