Sun Smart Kids, Happy Summer Days!

Written by Child Care Aware® of Missouri | Jul 7, 2026 10:30:56 PM

As the weather gets warmer, children are excited to spend more time outdoors exploring, playing, and enjoying nature.

While outdoor play is important for healthy growth and development, it is also a good time to remember the importance of sun safety. Young children's skin is especially sensitive to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays, and too much exposure can lead to painful sunburns and increase the risk of skin damage later in life. By taking a few simple precautions, families can help protect their children while making the most of outdoor adventures.

Sun safety starts with everyday habits. Before heading outside, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and remember to reapply it throughout the day, especially after water play or sweating.

Lightweight clothing, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and plenty of water can help children stay comfortable and protected. Whenever possible, seek shade during the sun's strongest hours. Teaching children about sun safety now helps build healthy habits that will benefit them for years to come, allowing them to enjoy the sunshine safely all summer long.

A little sun safety goes a long way. Find family-friendly tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics to help children stay safe while enjoying the outdoors. Click here to learn more.
