Healthy Habits Take Root at Westbrook Academy

Westbrook Academy is creating healthier environments through increased physical activity, better hydration access, and nutritious food choices. Consistent, evidence-based changes are helping healthy habits take root for children and families.

Jennifer Westbrook and Lee Noland, owners of Westbrook Academy’s JeffCo Blvd and Morris Avenue locations in Arnold, are proving that small changes can make a big difference in children’s health. Their JeffCo Blvd program joined Go NAPSACC to strengthen wellness practices through evidence-based strategies that support healthy habits from an early age.

As part of their efforts, the academy expanded opportunities for indoor physical activity by adding engaging equipment such as a hopscotch carpet and an indoor climbing wall. They also introduced a mobile hydration station that moves easily between indoor and outdoor learning environments, ensuring children have access to water throughout the day.

Jennifer credits much of their success to her teachers’ openness to learning and continuous improvement. An avid researcher, she turned to Go NAPSACC, Team Nutrition USDA, and Grow with MO from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for resources to enhance both classroom practices and family engagement. “Everything you need is right there,” Jennifer shared, while Lee added, “You don’t have to recreate the wheel.” While not every change was embraced immediately, consistent exposure to fresh fruits and vegetables, along with sharing recipes and nutrition information with families, helped healthy habits take root.

Building on their success, Westbrook Academy’s Morris Avenue location is now participating in the current Go NAPSACC cohort, focusing on Outdoor Play and creating even more opportunities for children to learn, grow, and thrive.
