April is Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Month

Written by Child Care Aware® of Missouri | Apr 14, 2026 5:38:40 PM

According to the Missouri Children’s Division’s Child Abuse and Neglect 2024 Annual Report, the state’s Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline received more than 64,000 reports involving over 91,000 children. Of those, 4,509 cases (4.9%) were substantiated as instances of abuse or neglect—4,509 children too many.

This month calls attention to the vital role early childhood educators play in keeping children safe, supported, and thriving. Educators are the eyes, ears, and hearts of their communities, often seeing families at their best—and at their most vulnerable.

Strong, stable, and nurturing relationships with children and their families form the foundation of healthy development. Simple, everyday actions—listening, offering support, and creating positive environments—can make a lasting difference. By staying informed, managing stress, and connecting families to local resources, we can help prevent abuse and neglect before it happens. Together, we can build a Missouri where every child feels safe, valued, and protected.

If you suspect child abuse or neglect, call the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1-800-392-3738.
