Why Parents Pay so Much for Child Care

Why do parents pay so much for child care when early educators earn so little?By Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE) • April 6, 2020

This infographic above demonstrates why the cost of child care is out of reach for most families, yet educators earn so little and identifies the need to invest in early education as a public good.

High-quality early care and education experiences, to which early educators are central, provide lasting benefits to children, our economy, and society but receive only minimal public investment. Most families who rely on child care are heavily burdened by the cost, and by the time their fees are applied to all the expenses it takes to run a program, very little is available for the educators themselves. As a result, educators end up subsidizing the true cost of high-quality services with their low wages.
