Where Do We Need Child Care?

Child Care Deserts are geographic areas where there is a lack of available child care options for families, whether it be the number of child care programs or available slots in existing programs. These deserts often occur in areas with low population density, making it difficult for child care providers to operate sustainably. They can also have high costs of living, making it difficult for families to afford child care even if it is available.

In Missouri, there has been a noteworthy reduction in the number of Child Care Desert counties in recent months. As of December 2023, 68 counties in the state are now designated as Child Care Deserts, down from 74 counties in December 2022. This decline indicates enhanced accessibility to child care across more regions of the state. Despite an overall decrease of just 14 child care programs in Missouri, the licensed capacity has increased by 1,675 child care spots, resulting in a further reduction of the additional capacity needed by 1,211.

The rise in capacity reflects the ability of many child care programs to accommodate more children by expanding their programs and recruiting additional staff. 

The decline in Child Care Deserts brings positive developments for Missouri families, yet there remains ongoing work. Parents still require child care for job acquisition and retention, and children need a secure environment that fosters their healthy development while their parents are at work. Without sufficient child care options to facilitate parental employment, Missouri's economy may face challenges.

New and existing child care facilities need active assistance to become viable and sustainable. This assistance should be a priority of governmental, public, and private entities. Through collaborative efforts, we can ensure that all families in Missouri have access to affordable and high-quality child care.
