Recognizing Quality: What to Look for in Child Care

Choosing child care is a big decision and one that can feel overwhelming. How do you know if a program is not only safe but also supports your child’s learning and development?
At Child Care Aware® of Missouri, we’re here to help families ask the right questions, know what to look for, and feel confident in their child care decisions.
Here are a few key things to watch for, based on our full child care quality and safety guide:
- Health & Safety Practices
Safe programs follow state licensing rules, have clean environments, and are prepared for emergencies. Look for visible handwashing routines, secure entryways, and updated CPR/first aid certifications. - Engaged and Qualified Staff
Caregivers should be warm, attentive, and knowledgeable about child development. Ask about staff training, experience, and how many children each caregiver supervises. - A Learning-Friendly Environment
High-quality programs support exploration and growth through play, books, music, and age-appropriate materials. Children should be active, curious, and engaged. - Communication with Families
Look for providers who keep you updated on your child’s progress, welcome your questions, and share daily routines or milestones. - Voluntary Accreditation Matters
Some providers go above and beyond licensing by choosing to become accredited through national or state-recognized organizations. Accreditation shows that a program meets higher standards for curriculum, staff training, safety, and family engagement. It’s a strong sign of a provider’s commitment to quality care.
Choosing child care doesn’t have to be stressful. Our team offers free, personalized referrals based on your child’s age, your location and schedule, and your preferences. We’ll also help you understand:
- Whether a provider is licensed or license-exempt
- What safety and quality standards they meet
- If they accept the child care subsidy (if applicable)
- What questions to ask during a tour or interview
You don’t have to figure this out alone. We’re here to help. View all our helpful guides and resources on our website or contact us today!
