A new school year brings exciting opportunities and fresh starts. For many children and families, beginning a new child care program is an important milestone. Young children thrive when they feel safe and secure, making the first few weeks an ideal time to build trusting relationships that help them adjust with confidence.

Building trust starts with the little things: warm greetings at drop-off, heartfelt goodbyes at pick-up, consistent daily routines, familiar comfort items when allowed, and open communication between families and caregivers. These simple interactions help children feel welcomed and valued while strengthening the partnership between families and early childhood educators.

One of the best ways to support a smooth transition is to learn about each child from the people who know them best: their family. Ask about favorite activities, family traditions, daily routines, and the strategies they use to comfort their child. This information helps educators respond to each child’s individual needs and creates continuity between home and the child care setting.

Remember that every child adjusts at their own pace. Some children eagerly jump into new experiences, while others need extra time and reassurance before they feel comfortable. With patience, encouragement, and a strong partnership between families and educators, children can develop meaningful relationships, confidently explore their new environment, and build the foundation for a successful year of learning and growth.
