Educators who model gratitude help strengthen relationships and build a caring classroom community.** November is National Gratitude Month, making it a wonderful time to help young children discover the joy of noticing and appreciating the people, experiences, and everyday moments around them. Gratitude is more than saying “thank you.” For young children, it is an opportunity to build social-emotional skills, strengthen relationships, and develop an appreciation for the kindness and support they receive from others. Early childhood professionals can make gratitude a natural part of the day. Invite children to share something they are thankful for during circle time, create a classroom gratitude board, or encourage children to draw a picture for someone who helped them. Educators can also model gratitude by saying, “I appreciate how you helped clean up.” Children learn gratitude by watching the adults around them.
