For employees with young children, child care can quietly influence whether staying in a job continues to work for their family. You as the employer invest significant time and resources in recruiting, onboarding, and developing employees. When someone leaves, you often look at compensation, advancement opportunities, management, and workplace culture to understand why. There may be another question worth asking: **Did child care make it difficult for this employee to stay?** Rising child care costs, limited availability, unreliable care, and child care schedules that do not align with work hours can create challenges for working parents. An employee may reduce their hours, turn down an advancement opportunity, frequently adjust their schedule, or ultimately decide that another job is easier to manage. **Look Beyond Traditional Retention Strategies** Supporting child care does not necessarily mean operating an on-site child care center or paying an employee's full tuition. Start by understanding whether child care is affecting your workforce. Are employees requesting frequent schedule changes? Are attendance challenges connected to child care disruptions? Are employees declining additional hours or advancement opportunities because of child care responsibilities? Are employees leaving unexpectedly? A short employee survey can help identify whether affordability, availability, or reliability is creating challenges. **Consider Child Care as a Workforce Benefit** If child care affordability emerges as a concern, **Child Care Works,** a child care workforce benefit, may be one option for you as the employer to explore. Child Care Works helps participating employers contribute toward eligible employees' child care costs while combining employer contributions with additional funding sources when available. This can give businesses another way to support employees without assuming the entire cost of child care. Various models are available for your business to share the cost of child care with your employees.
